When it comes to travel, we'll take all the money-saving advice we can get!
That's why we had CBS News Travel Editor Peter Greenberg — a.k.a. "The Travel Detective" — stop by our show to share his travel secrets.
RELATED: 7 Brilliant Ways to Travel Cheaper and Smarter
Whether you're planning a road trip or booking a car at the other end of a flight, the pro has two clever tips for renting a car that could potentially save you big bucks.
1. Consider Planning Your Trip Around a Saturday Pick-Up
According to Peter, the best day to pick up a rental car is Saturday!
Why? Because Saturdays see the largest number of no-shows at rental car companies, according to the expert.
"Rent the cheapest car you can find for a Saturday rental," he suggests. When you show up, you'll have a much better chance of a free upgrade on the model and size of your car, Peter claims.
2. Ask About Drive Away Deals (They Won't Be Advertised!)
While they're not typically advertised, the travel pro says that some companies may have something called a "drive away" deal, depending on the season.
During different times of the year, companies are inundated with more cars than they can rent out. So, they're happy to have you drive them in another direction for a fraction of the regular rental rate, Peter claims.
For example, he says companies don't want a lot of cars in Florida, California or Arizona in the summer. They need to move cars where the demand is, so call the rental car company and ask if they have any drive away deals — which can be as low as $9 a day, according to Peter.
"They want you to drive the car out," he continues. "So plan your vacation accordingly, and it's almost free."
