Carmen and Kara started Prosperity Market to bring Black-owned food vendors to food deserts around Los Angeles—and what it's become is truly incredible.
"There are very few Black-owned large food businesses that are healthy and good for you, and there are a lot of areas that are considered food deserts—where there are just not a lot of healthy affordable options," Kara explains. "LA is very spread out, so if you want to support a Black business, but you live in the Valley or the Westside, it's not the most convenient thing, so we were trying to figure out how to make it more convenient to support Black businesses," says Carmen. Hence the creation of Prosperity Market!
And even with all they've accomplished, Kara and Carmen still have more dreams for the future of Prosperity Market. "The next step would be getting our trailer. When we have our mobile trailer, our farmers market on wheels, we can touch even more people, we can go into even more communities, and we can just continue to expand."
Our friends at Otto's Naturals wanted to help, so they are donating $10,000 and an assortment of baking mixes to Prosperity Market!
