If you want to really creep out the kiddos who come trick or treating, try design expert Kristen Cunningham’s tip – cut a life-sized silhouette of a person out of cardboard and put it in your window behind a white curtain (or even just a plain white sheet) with a light shining toward the window. It will look like someone is lurking behind the curtain, providing quick and easy creep factor!

Tip 3: Pick the Perfect Pumpkin for Carving

Jack-o-lanterns are one of the most affordable and easy ways to decorate for Halloween. Lifestyle expert Carter Oosterhouse says you should look for a carving pumpkin that is heavy for its size with walls that are hard – an easy way to test the hardness is to make sure you can’t easily pierce the skin with your fingernail. Also, turn the pumpkin over and make sure the bottom isn’t squishy or soft. Check the stem – if it’s strong and hearty, rather than dry and brittle, you’re good to go because that means it’s been freshly harvested. Now, get carving!

Tip 4: Make Your Own Spooky Lanterns

Just take an old tin can, draw a Halloween theme on it then (carefully!) drill small holes along the outline of the design. Pop in a candle and you’ve got an instant spooky lantern!

Decorating for Halloween doesn’t have to be limited to visuals! You can make your home smell like Halloween too with Rachael’s DIY jack-o-lantern pumpkin scent. She just takes the lid off a jack-o-lantern, rubs the bottom with cloves and cinnamon, then puts it back in place. The heat from a candle inside will fill the house with pumpkin spice fragrance!

Tip 6: Make a Goosebump-Inducing Eyeball Wreath
