Model Susan Holmes McKagan shares a dog treat recipe inspired by her new bestselling novel The Velvet Rose.

Pro Tip: For the work surface, any flour or more ground oats will work in place of the whole wheat flour.

Note: Every pet is different, so check with your vet to see if this recipe is suitable for your dog.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup old-fashioned, 1-minute or instant oats, plus more as needed
  • ⅓ cup canned pure pumpkin
  • ¼ cup natural peanut butter (use one that doesn’t contain artificial sweetener xylitol)
  • Whole wheat flour, for work surface

Yield

Serves: 18 to 24 treats

Preparation

Preheat oven to 300˚F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a food processor, process oats until they resemble a fine powder. Add pumpkin and peanut butter and process until a sticky dough is formed.

On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough until about ½ inch thick. Using a small cookie cutter or knife, cut out treats.

Arrange treats on the prepared baking sheet and bake until treats are dry and hard, 25 to 30 minutes. Let cool before feeding to your pup.
