Need ideas for what to watch in 2021?
We asked Jeremy Parsons, New York Correspondent for People.com's "PEOPLE (The TV Show!)" and our go-to guy when it comes to the best shows to binge-watch, about the shows and movies that should be on our radar in early 2021. Here are his top four picks.
WHAT TO WATCH NOW
1. If you need a dose of reality TV…
Watch: "The Bachelor"
"The 25th season just kicked off. You can dive in early here," Jeremy says. Matt James, this season's Bachelor, was actually on our show in Season 13. He started an organization a few years ago called ABC Food Tours, where the former football player took students on food tours in NYC to expand their palates.
Matt is the first-ever Black bachelor, which is a big deal for the Bachelor franchise. He is also the first bachelor since season 12 who is not a former contestant, Jeremy says. "We're all kind of learning about him. He rose to fame because he was Tyler Cameron (a former contestant's) roommate and best friend. They've done the ABC Food Tours together."
Fun Fact: "An ABC exec said that since he's less known, they had a lot more unexpected, unique moments. So not only do we as fans not fully know what to expect, but the producers didn't fully know either. And Matt said that he's never been in love before. Will this do it? I don't know, but I hope so!" Jeremy says.
You can stream Season 25 of "The Bachelor" on ABC.com after signing in with your TV provider, or with a subscription to Hulu + Live TV.
WHAT TO WATCH IN FEBRUARY 2021
2. If you're into ripped-from-the-headlines crime dramas…
Watch: "The Equalizer"
"The Equalizer" was originally a TV series that ran from 1985 to 1989. Then it was a film starring Denzel Washington in 2014. Now, the show is being remade, with Queen Latifah taking over, Jeremy explains.
She plays a former CIA agent and single mom in NYC helping people with nowhere else to turn.
Fun Fact: "The showrunners said that they are so pumped for fans to see Queen Latifah in this pulse-pounding motorcycle chase scene. It turns out Queen Latifah is really great and actually experienced on motorcycles, so they worked it in," Jeremy says. "There's nothing she can't do."
"The Equalizer" premieres right after the Super Bowl, Sunday, February 7, 2021 on CBS.
WHAT TO WATCH IN MARCH 2021
3. If you've seen "Coming To America" more times than you can count…
Watch: "Coming 2 America"
"It's the sequel to that original movie from the '80s that became this iconic film for Eddie Murphy," Jeremy says. "Watch the original 'Coming To America,' get caught up. This one comes out in March."
"Eddie Murphy's back and we're going to see other original cast members: Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, Shari Headley, Louie Anderson. Also new cast members: Wesley Snipes, Leslie Jones, Tracy Morgan."
Fun Fact: "It's a family affair! Eddie Murphy's real-life daughter, Bella, is making her big screen debut playing one of Eddie's character's daughters in the film. She actually had to audition for the role, so just because you're really his daughter doesn't mean you get to play his daughter without an audition," Jeremy says.
You can watch "Coming 2 America" on Amazon Prime Video on March 5, 2021.
WHAT TO WATCH IN FALL 2021
4. If you loved "The Sopranos"...
Watch: "The Many Saints of Newark" (film)
The much-anticipated, long-awaited "Sopranos" prequel film, "The Many Saints of Newark," is finally coming out this year. (Meaning if you're one of the few people who never watched "The Sopranos" or you're due for a re-watch of the iconic series, now's your chance!)
"Fans have been buzzing about this for a long time," Jeremy says.
"The big news here is that James Gandolfini's son, Michael, is actually playing the same role of Tony Soprano, earlier in life," Jeremy dishes. "This one's set in 1967 [with] the riots in the city as the backdrop of all of this, the feuding between the Italian and African American communities. We get to find out and understand how Tony became Tony. And the fact that Michael is playing it is just incredible."
Fun Fact: "Apparently he had not ever seen an episode of 'The Sopranos' until he started prepping to audition for this role. Isn't that wild?" Jeremy says.
You can watch "The Many Saints of Newark" in theaters and on HBO Max for 31 days starting on September 24, 2021.
