Getting the kids dressed and ready for school, making sure everyone eats breakfast, packing lunches, tidying up the kitchen, and making sure everyone — adults included — is on their way on time in the morning can be, well, exhausting. (And the day has only just begun!)
If any of this sounds familiar, you’re going to love these tips to help jumpstart your morning routine from organizing pro Peter Walsh.
“There are some simple things you can do to organize your home and your morning to get out of the house without stress,” Peter says.
Tip 1: Turn Back the Clock
Peter’s first tip is an oldie but goodie: Set all of the clocks in your home forward 10 minutes.
“One of the things people end up getting into trouble with, in terms of getting out of the house in the morning, is they chronically underestimate the amount of time it will take,” Peter says.
By setting your clocks ahead — even if you know they’re fast — you will still be out the door minutes ahead of schedule.
Tip 2: Fashionably Great, and Never Be Late
Planning out your weekday outfits on Sunday night really does make a huge difference. But what’s the best way to do this? Here’s how to put this tip into action in your household:
For Adults:
Peter’s DIY tip is to label blank, laminated door signs with days of the week, and hang the signs on the hanger with the complete outfit you’ll wear for that corresponding day. Use erasable marker to add reminders of important daily events, such as a big meeting, or a date night.
For Kids:
Hang an organizer in each kids’ closet and label the individual cubbies with days of the week, Monday through Friday. Then, on Sunday nights, ask your kids (or, if they’re young enough, help them) to pick out the clothes that they would like to wear for each school day and to put them into the respective cubbies.
A little extra effort on Sunday night means you might actually be able to take five extra minutes for yourself. (Imagine that!)
