As a former fashion stylist, Preston Konrad has a lot of clothes—and a lot of tricks for making them fit in small storage spaces since he works and lives in NYC. Here are his top tips for keeping everything organized and functional in a small closet like his.

1. Organize by Color

"I keep everything organized by color: my neutrals, my greens, etc.” He also keeps his “bright items” in their own separate stack to add a fun pop of color to his closet.

"I've got my fun winter plaid in the front and then I go through all of my solids like navy, black, brown...clearly I have a coat obsession," says Preston.

2. Use Clear Shelf Dividers

“These keep all of your sweaters and folder items standing up straight and organized perfectly," says Preston.

3. Use Plastic Hangers with Clips For Pants & Bottoms

"This is an old stylist trick from when I worked in fashion. Clear plastic hangers with clips will be your absolute best friend. We used them at all of our photoshoots. They are not only affordable, but they condense really tightly, so you can squeeze a lot into a small space," he explains.

4. Add Double Hanging for Shorter Coats

"I told you I have a coat problem. Again, I stick things by color, texture and weight," he says.

5. Customize Your Shelving to How You Dress

Preston added a very skinny shelf at the top specifically for his hats: “If you have smaller items, like my baseball caps, keep them all organized on the top, so you can grab one right before you run out the door," he adds.

6. Use Velvet Hangers For Dress Shirts and Suits

"Using velvet hangers is a really good fashion tip—not only because it will keep all of your stuff really secured to the hanger, but it will give you so much space to squish things in and fit more," Preston explains.

7. Use a Letter Organizer For Bags

When it comes to storing little pouches or bags, Preston goes for a letter organizer. “It's such a creative way to make sure everything stays where it should without falling to the back of the closet.”
